Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time (8th October 2023)

Reflection

Dom Aelred Watkins, article on resurrection, delves into the profound human experience of death, presenting it as an inescapable 'other' that signifies an end, silencing loved voices, fading memories, and marking constant loss in a world characterised by decay and transience. This pervasive awareness of passing is juxtaposed with a powerful counter-current: the belief in a dynamic, creative force that triumphs over destruction. These opposing forces of hope and despair, creation and destruction, create a fundamental tension, yet neither can be fully embraced or completely abandoned by humanity. Despite our cynical realism, we cannot relinquish creative hope, nor can we ignore the piercing reality of death and decay, making facile optimism or utter despair equally unsustainable. Death is thus described as a "great sign of contradiction," an inevitable certainty that signifies either ultimate destruction or, from a Christian perspective, ultimate triumph and lasting glory. Christian faith asserts that life is not mere transience, but that an eternal life beats at the heart of things, with death serving as the rending of a veil that hides immortality. Central to Christianity is the conviction that love is stronger than death, hope transcends separation, and faith provides access to truth, offering the permanent possession of humanity's deepest yearnings. Therefore, the text encourages a courageous confrontation with death, seeing it not as an end but as a beginning for Christians, a gateway to the unknown where resurrection is already interwoven with life itself.
